The prevention of back injuries must remain as one of our utmost priorities both on and off the job. Back injuries are cited as the most common reason for absenteeism in the workforce only surpassed by the common cold. It is reported that 80% of adults are estimated to experience a back injury in their lifetime, and about 10% of these will suffer a re injury. Many organizations are taking steps to reduce the occurrence of back injuries in the workplace by instituting programs directed at better health and ergonomics. Taking the lead in these programs is the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).
Some other back statistics:
Low back pain is the fifth most common reason for all physician visits in the United States .
Back pain is the most frequent cause of activity limitation in people younger than 45 years old.
Approximately one quarter of U.S. adults reported having low back pain lasting at least one whole day in the past three months, and 7.6 percent reported at least one episode of severe acute low back pain within a one-year period.
One-half of all working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year.

What does this mean to the employers?
It means that the prevention of back related injuries continue to be the highest priority in the workplace. Companies are taking new steps, and looking more diligently at processes utilized in their production cycles to ensure that these types of injuries are controlled. These changes include the placing of “ergonomic” pads in the areas where workers are required to stand for prolonged periods in the performance of their tasks. It includes the use of movable work surfaces that tilt and can be adjusted in height to reduce the need for workers to bend and stretch. It also includes the use of “tool assists” to aid workers when they are required to use heavy or awkward tools while performing their job.
These changes can only be successful when you the employee make it part of your job to utilize the equipment provided. During my recent visits to our client’s locations, I have found that the clients are working diligently to provide the necessary tools and accommodations to aid in the prevention of back related injuries.
During my walk around inspection at these locations I have observed employees and contractors continuing to do the job just the same as they have in the past while not utilizing the new changes and equipment provided for their safety.
Remember that PDS and our clients are working diligently to find new and better ways to perform work tasks that help eliminate back related, as well as all other injuries, but this must be a team effort. Back injuries result most often in lost time, pain, and the inability to do the things that enable you to enjoy life. Make sure to talk with your supervisor and utilize the equipment provided. Become properly trained on these new procedures and equipment, and work together to stay safe, both on and off the job.
